Meet Ami:
Ami’s love for swimming began at just one year old, when her mother first taught her to swim. A true water baby, she started competitive swimming at eight and progressed to SA Junior National level. She had the opportunity to represent South Africa and Western Cape Aquatics at a gala in Pretoria, competing against other provinces and countries, including Kenya and Ethiopia. She also competed at the SA National Junior Championships, travelling to places such as Port Elizabeth, Oudtshoorn and George.
Beyond competing, Ami enjoys giving back to the community through volunteering to teach children who cannot afford lessons, helping with stroke correction and participating in swimathons to raise funds for swimming lessons. She is also a qualified lifeguard with experience working at Bellville Swimming Pool for the City of Cape Town. Seeing how many children and adults had never learned to swim inspired her to pursue her Learn to Swim teaching qualification and help others develop essential swimming and water-safety skills.
Ami currently teaches at Stars Swimming School, working with swimmers from as young as two years old and across different ages, abilities and skill levels. She loves creating fun, interactive lessons that help each swimmer feel comfortable and confident in the water, while encouraging them to progress at their own pace.
For Ami, teaching swimming is incredibly rewarding. She loves watching swimmers overcome their fears, grow in confidence and celebrate their achievements, no matter how big or small. Sharing her passion for swimming and helping others develop a love for the water is what makes teaching so special to her.
